This new wordpress plugin “WP PowerLinks” hunts out niche specific .EDU and .GOV backlinks in Google. I am sure you know the value of such links. Typically these are higher value links which drive higher rankings for your sites.

Google loves sites that grow organically, and sites that grow organically will naturally have other sites in their niche linking back to them. Like any other link, a .EDU link that is high PR and from a niche related site is worth more than a low PR link from an unrelated site. (not that PR is an accurate measure of link juice)
In addition this wordpress plugin is looking for links form sites with high traffic, and I think traffic levels are a little like PR, as Google certainly looks at the popularity of a site in deciding on trust and authority.

Most marketers will lie and say that .EDU and .GOV links are the end all be all solution.
And it’s true, they do carry some weight because Google sees .EDU and .GOV links as trusted domains as only established reputable institutions can obtain them.
But they aren’t the end all be all solution and it’s hard to rank a site based on these types of links alone. Instead, these links should be used as part of your overall link building plan. Diversity is key!
