The Penguin/Panda updates obliterated many AdSense sites when they took effect…

Yet some sites stood firm in their rankings and picked up from where the others left off, continuing to make a profit in the long run.

The Panda Effect…

Previous to February 2011, AdSense incomes were generated by buying a bunch of domains, across several open niches, throwing up the same old spun content and buying a ton of backlinks.

These sites were seen as thin, low-quality sites. They didn’t provide much value, weren’t particularly user friendly, so Google brought in the Panda update to expel these fluff sites to the back pages.

The sites that took back the front page, were high-quality sites packed with valuable content… and NOT plastered with AdSense.

Because sites with too much AdSense ‘above the fold’ were demoted in the SERPs as well… this was known by some as the ‘Top Heavy’ update.

Together, this made earning a decent income from AdSense much more challenging.

The Penguin Effect…

After Panda hit, but before April 2012, AdSense site creators adapted to produce higher quality content, hiring quality writers… or even learning to write better content themselves.

But many still relied on buying 1000s of backlinks each months to edge their sites up through the rankings, and keyword stuffing was still rampant.

Then Penguin hit… and manipulating backlink profiles became a sure path to ruin.

This of course made lucrative, organic traffic that much more difficult for many, and beyond the capacity for short-term thinkers.

There’s only one thing to remember here…

Google will choose content over ad revenue every time…

Google WANTS sites monetizing with AdSense to prosper, because almost 30% of its revenue comes directly from the AdSense platform.

BUT… it cannot sacrifice it’s position as the #1 search engine in the world, providing the best user experience, by returning only the highest quality content… for the sake of a little extra revenue generated by cheap, crappy sites.

So work WITH Google, provide that quality content, become an authority… and secure your position throughout Google’s future updates while others fall by the wayside… and profit!
