In 2007 there was a practice known as ‘Google Bowling’ where a malicious person could blast a competing site with a ton of low-quality backlinks and seriously damage their rankings (so the attacker could move up a notch or two in the SERPs…).
That practice was soon put to bed for the most part, but with the latest Penguin Update… It’s back.
In 2008 I discovered how to negatively impact a site’s search engine rankings entirely by accident. It was on my own site, and I decided to repeat the techniques in controlled environments (on my own test sites) to determine if the threat was real, or fluke.
Unfortunately it was very real… And I found out others were using the same kinds of methods against their competition constantly.
I immediately set out to secure my sites against these kinds of attacks… but there are still so many who remain at risk and without the proper precautions. Especially Post-Penguin.
